Blur, pixelate, or cover a face: what each method hides
Parents often ask whether a blur, a mosaic, an emoji, or a solid cover is "enough." Each method changes different pixels. None of them makes a person impossible to identify, and none of them is AI-proof.
The Baby Acrobatics tool currently offers blur, mosaic, and emoji covers painted into the saved file. The comparison below also discusses opaque covers and cropping, which you may do in other editors. Those extra methods are not all buttons inside this tool.
Edit before uploading, not inside the social app
An Instagram Story emoji can hide a face from viewers. But selecting the original in Instagram gives the app access to that file before you add the sticker. We cannot verify what Instagram retains beneath every sticker, so we do not claim it always stores an uncovered original.
For more control, cover the face on your device, export a new file, and give the social app only that copy. Use selected-photo access where your phone offers it. This does not remove originals you have previously shared.

Cover the whole face; glyph edges may leave gaps.Mosaic mode first blurs the image region, then runs two pixelation passes. Blur mode uses an adjustable blur. Both use softened edges, which blend the covered region with the image beneath. Emoji mode draws the selected glyph. Each effect is painted into the exported photo or video; it is not a removable editing layer.
Multiple passes can obscure detail, but they are not proof of irreversible anonymization. Strong coverage and a careful review of every frame still matter. These descriptions come from the tool’s rendering code, not an independent security certification.
Weak versus stronger obfuscation
Strength comes from how completely the original face pixels are replaced, and from whether the result is flattened into the file you post. A tiny blur, a see-through sticker, or a cover that only exists in an editable project is weaker than an opaque region baked into the export.
Research on some blur methods shows that recoverable information can remain. Treat that research as research, not as a benchmark of this specific tool. Read the Privacy Blur research.
Opaque covers and cropping
Replacing pixels with an opaque cover is different from keeping a removable overlay. Even a fully covered face does not anonymize the surrounding scene. A school jumper, a front door, or a sibling standing beside them can still tell a viewer who they are.
Exported images versus editable projects
Social apps sometimes recompress a file. They do not reliably strip identifying context. Save a copy, open that copy, and post the copy. Do not assume a project file or a screenshot of the editor is what followers will see.
Movement in video
A still that looks covered can fail when the person turns or walks. Follow the video workflow if the file is a clip rather than a photo.
Contextual identification
People recognize children from hair, clothes, rooms, and routines. Covering a face is one reduction in detail. It is not anonymity.
When to keep media private
If someone must not be identifiable, do not publish the media. Do not use a public before-image of a real child to demonstrate these methods. This page uses no child's unblurred face.
