How to blur faces in Premiere Pro

You open a tutorial, follow the first two steps, and discover that the button you're supposed to press doesn't exist. Or at least it doesn't exist where it does on the person's screen.
Adobe has changed Premiere's masking tools, so before we get into this, check which instructions fit your version. Its June 1, 2026 tutorial starts with an Ellipse Mask in the toolbar, tracks it in Effect Controls, then applies Gaussian Blur. That's the workflow below, based on Adobe's tutorial. We haven't tested it in your installed release.
One other detail: the demonstration eventually reveals the face. It's teaching an effect. If you're using that effect to protect a child's privacy, keep the blur in place for the entire time the face is visible.
It sounds obvious written down. It's quite easy to carry on following a tutorial and copy the bit you didn't want.
Make the mask, then give it the blur
Open the sequence you're editing, select the clip and find a frame where the face is easy to see. A sequence is the arrangement of clips in your video. The mask you'll draw marks the area that gets blurred; tracking makes that area follow the face.
Before drawing anything, check the rest of the picture. Each other person you want to obscure needs their own coverage too.
For the interface shown in Adobe's June 2026 demonstration:
- Click and hold the masking tool in the toolbar, then choose Ellipse Mask.
- Draw the ellipse, an oval, over the face. Adjust its shape and leave enough room around the features.
- Find the mask in Effect Controls and track it forwards and backwards through the clip.
- Keep the mask selected, find Gaussian Blur in the Effects panel and apply it. This is the effect that softens the picture inside your oval.
- Adjust the blur, then inspect the whole shot.
Those steps follow Adobe's mask-and-blur lesson. Older releases can have mask controls attached directly to effects. If that's what you're looking at, use the help for that release. A different interface doesn't mean the project needs rebuilding.
Choose coverage before worrying about a pretty edge
A tutorial often tries to produce a pleasant image. For this edit, I would first decide how much of the face I'm willing to leave visible, then worry about how the edge looks.
Look at the largest face in the shot. Can you still make out the eyes, mouth or other recognisable features? Increase the treatment or choose another method if the answer is yes. Don't assume a blur value that looked fine on a small background face will do the same thing in a close-up.
A visible cover is fine. You're already choosing to leave the face out; you don't have to disguise the fact that you've made that choice.
The comparison of blur, pixelation and covers explains what each method does. A solid cover you can't see through, or a crop that leaves the face out, removes more of the original facial information from the shared copy. The voice, clothes, location and other people in the scene can still give someone away.
Watch what the tracker actually does
Let tracking handle the repetitive movement. Then slow down where the picture changes: a head turn, a quick camera move, someone walking in front, the child getting closer.
If the mask wanders, pause at the first frame where part of the face appears outside it. Check whether the mask needs moving, enlarging or both. After adjusting it, replay that short stretch and return to a frame that was covered before. You want the turn covered without losing the opening.
If a troublesome three seconds doesn't add much, I'd also consider cutting it. There comes a point where you've spent half an hour preserving a moment nobody needed to see.

That last check matters if you've followed the Adobe demonstration. Go back through any keyframes that change the effect's strength. Keyframes save settings at particular moments, letting an effect change as the video plays. A reveal can look very deliberate while being exactly wrong for this particular job.
A note if you're using AI Object Masks
If you've only used the ellipse above, you can skip this section. Premiere also has an AI Object Mask, which finds the outline of an object for you. If you use Object Masks elsewhere in your project, Adobe says their data lives in a separate folder. Missing data makes those masks unavailable.
So keep that data with the project, and deal with an offline-mask warning before calling the export ready. That warning applies to Object Masks specifically. See Adobe's Object Mask documentation.
Review the file you're giving people
Export your finished edit as a new video file, open it outside Premiere and play it from beginning to end. Inspect the places that were difficult to track. Then listen and look beyond the mask: a nursery sign, a location caption, a second child's face on a phone screen.
Do the photo and video location check before uploading. If the uncovered original is already online, this local edit won't change it; use the child-photo removal guide for the posted copy as well.
The tracker tells you it finished analysing the shot. You still decide whether the result is something you want to share. Make that decision from the exported file, with all the other details back in view.
